Don’t be this person

Most of you that know me, know that I’m a little rough around the edges. But deep down inside, I like to think I can be very helpful to people that I care about. If you’ve not given me reason, I probably won’t help too much.

I feel this is fair. Its the people who live their lives trying to get others to do their work for them that irritates the bejeezus out of me. I’m all for offering up a piece of solicited advice, or lending a hand when asked. But I don’t like to be asked for help, then given the task to do completely alone.

This has happened at work recently. Someone asked me for help with something that they “heard” I was proficient at. Thanks for the veiled complement, by the way. So, I couldn’t help them directly, only because I didn’t have the proper tool to do the job. But, I did do the research, and presented them with the tool, so they could do it themselves. “Teach a man to fish…” Right?

No, this wasn’t good enough. “Ok, thanks! I’ll just call an outside vendor.” WTF? You’d rather spend company money to have someone else do something that I showed you how to do yourself? This is the type of person that will spend twice as much time finding someone to do the job for them, than it would have taken them to do the job in the first place.

The sad thing is, I’m sure they’ll make management long before I do.

Oh well. I just can’t be that person.
